![]() ![]() Kishwar’s poetry harkens to a sense of colonial patriarchy that is carried forth in new, reproduced and re-sourced contemporary manifestations, under religious justifications that hold no logical weight. It is the subversion of that literary form, though, not the eschewing of it wholesale, that produces such a powerful effect. However, compared to the mystical, disjointed nature of the ghazal, these images refer to a political reality more than a personal relationship with God, and the metaphors are elongated and elaborated. ![]() In this very poem, the images of the self as nature/yearning/seeking the inaccessible are utilized. Ahmad makes the argument in her introduction to We Sinful Women: Contemporary Urdu Feminist Poetry that this Urdu poetry departs from many of the traditions of the classic ghazal, but I believe that resonant image clusters do remain a significant part of Naheed’s poetry. “The grass is also like me” and other poems by Kishwar Naheed, the Pakistani feminist poet (here translated by Rukhsana Ahmad), speak to the reader/listener both politically and emotionally. The sea voyage and the subsequent months in Santa Marina show that Rachel is also on an inner journey, to understand herself better. Rachel's mother has passed away many years ago. “The next few months passed away, as many years can pass away, without definite events, and yet, if suddenly disturbed, it would be seen that such months or years had a character unlike others.” The inner journey within this story is perhaps best summarized in the author's words: As I read the story, the title of the story became a metaphor for Rachel's inner journey. This is a story about a young English woman, Rachel, on a sea voyage from London, to a South American coastal city of Santa Marina. ![]() ![]() ![]() I will definitely be one clicking more' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ reader review But this book and never regret it' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ reader review ![]() 'How have I missed this awesome author for so long?. I’m all about world/character building but by the end I was literally saying out loud “get to the point already”. Good novels will make you want to go re-read them after a time and enjoy the journey all over again, you couldn’t pay me to read these novels again. During the fourth book I had to literally force myself to continue to the end as I grew so tired of the author’s writing style of dragging things painfully out. ![]() ![]() Most of the content/banter/information is truly nonsense and unnecessary. The story is overly confusing and not in a good “aha, so that’s what all that meant” kind of way. EVERY random thought/observation/action is quickly followed up by a metaphor of some kind or some character’s introspection. I don’t mind reading lengthy novels if the story is moving forward or the conversations/information has a point to it (I only had issues with one of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series where nothing truly happened), however, these four novels have a ridiculous amount of filler/nonsense to them. ![]() |
